  • A Mrs Sri Lanka controversy resulted to the winner Pushpika De Silva being humiliated and injured onstage after Mrs World Caroline Jurie forcefully pulled the crown off her head.
  • According to Jurie, De Silva didn’t deserve the crown because she’s “divorced.”
  • Jurie ended up getting arrested and the crown was later returned to De Silva.

Earlier this month, the Mrs Sri Lanka pageant ended up in a messy controversy after Mrs World Caroline Jurie stood up on stage, announced that the newly-crowned winner doesn’t deserve it, and proceeded to yank the crown off her head.

As seen in the video that has since gone viral online, Jurie walked up on stage and said new Mrs Sri Lanka Pushpika De Silva actually isn’t qualified to win the title and the crown belongs to the second placer.

Jurie told the crowd:

“I have a small request. As for the Mrs World Inc, there’s a rule that you all have to be married and not divorced. So I’m taking my first step to say that the crown goes to the first runner-up.

Eventually, reports surfaced that De Silva is not officially divorced yet but is currently separated from her husband.

De Silva also turned to social media to share how she she had to go to a hospital after getting injured because of the incident.

She wrote:

“The pain of my skull when my crown was snatched from my head by the world married beauty queen, the pain I felt when I lost the crown is more than both.”

De Silva has also “passed the necessary legal action for that injustice and insult.”

Mrs World Caroline Jurie has since been arrested, according to the authorities.

In a media interview, police spokesman Ajith Rohana confirmed:

“Police arrested Caroline Jurie and model Chula Padmendra over Sunday’s incident on charges of simple hurt and criminal cause.”

Chandimal Jayasinghe, chief organizer of Mrs Sri Lanka, has said she was “disappointed” by Jurie’s act and assured that investigations are currently ongoing. They have also asked Jurie to issue a public apology.

Meanwhile, the crown has already been returned to De Silva who said that her victory is dedicated to “single mums who are suffering to raise their kids alone.”
