Archaeologists Discover The Oldest Cheese Ever In An Ancient Egyptian Tomb
The cheese found in What 3,000-year-old tomb in Egypt could possibly be the oldest one in the world. Amid broken jars and shattered glass, a team of archaeologists cleaning sand from an ancient Egyptian tomb a few years ago discovered a mysterious white substance.
It is believed to be made of either cow or goat milk and was uncovered in the tomb of Ptahmes. Egyptian archaeologists have identified what is “probably the most ancient archaeological solid residue of cheese ever found to date.”
The world’s oldest cheese has been found in a tomb in Egypt.
The cheese is estimated to be 3,200 years old.
Lead author Enrico Greco said:
“The archaeologists suspected it was food, according to the conservation method and the position of the finding inside the tomb, but we discovered it was cheese after the first tests.”
However, researchers warn that it may contain some harmful bacteria.
They say some types of cheese get better with age, but certainly not this one. According to reports, the cheese might not be safe for consumption and might be a source of brucellosis.
Researchers are not quite sure what the ancient cheese taste like though.
Paul Kindstedt, a University of Vermont professor and cheese expert, said:
“It would be high in moisture; it would be spreadable … It would not last long; it would spoil very quickly.”
Still, some have noted that they want to try it anyway.
Disregarding the experts’ warnings, cheese lovers still took to Twitter to express their desires to try the potentially fatal cheese anyway. Some couldn’t seem to care less about eating the diseased cheese while others are curious about pairing it with the red liquid found in the nearby sarcophagus.
Would you dare to give this 3,200-year-old cheese a bite?
