Who would have thought that a baby one pediatrician fought so hard to save would be the one to save him 30 years later?

Born prematurely and weighing just 3.2 lbs in 1985, Chris Trokey was given a 50/50 chance of survival but his pediatrician, Dr. Michael Shannon, worked hard to save the child’s life. Chris would survive and grow up to be a firefighter.

In an incredible twist of fate, Chris got the chance to return the favor when Dr. Michael had to be rescued during a terrible accident. The pediatrician was driving through Orange County, California, when his vehicle clashed with a truck.

The impact was so great that Dr. Michael’s legs were pinned by his flaming vehicle. Flames began to lick on his legs even as firefighters fought hard to extinguish fire and remove him from the wreckage. Incredibly, it was Chris who was among the first on the scene; he helped cut a hole in the vehicle so they could pull the doctor out.

However, it was only while visiting Dr. Michael at the hospital that the two learned each other’s names and realized the incredible story they simply had to share to the world. It is amazing how the rescuer became the rescued after all those years.

“It’s amazing to watch them all grow up, but to have one come back in your life, on a day you really need it, that’s really incredible,” Dr. Michael Shannon told KTLA.
