  • Natalie Portman is officially back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • For the Phase 4 movie Thor: Love and Thunder, the actress will be reprising her role as Jane Foster – and she will be wielding the mythical hammer Mjolnir.

Marvel Studios have recently announced their full slate of movie and television projects for 2020 and 2021 – and fans are extremely excited as early as now. From the looks of it, the Phase 4 will introduce us to new franchises while giving a twist to some of the characters we’ve already known in the past.

Case in point, one of the most surprising announcements from the studio was the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. The shocker, of course, is the fact that she’s playing a bigger role this time around because – wait for it – she will be the new Thor.

Not just a love interest – a superhero!

During Marvel’s Hall H panel at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed the company’s upcoming movies and called in some of the directors and cast members who will be working on the said projects.

When Thor: Love and Thunder was presented on stage, director Taika Waititi ceremoniously dropped to his knee and handed the mythical hammer Mjolnir to Portman, much to the delight of everyone in attendance.

It’s been a while since we last saw Jane…

Portman last acted side by side with Hemsworth in the movie Thor: The Dark World (2013).

In 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, the character is mentioned when Thor and Tony Stark talk about her and Pepper Potts during a party. In Avengers: Endgame (2019), she appears in an Asgard seen through unused footage from Thor: The Dark World.

Jane Foster as Thor isn’t exactly a surprise among comic book readers.

Although Jane Foster has been in the comics for the longest time, it was writer Jason Aaron and illustrator Russell Dauterman who introduced her as Thor in October 2014. The character immediately gained a following and was later added to the lineup of the Avengers in 2015.

She has since appeared in the animated series Avengers: Assemble as well as in several video games such as Marvel Contest of Champions, Marvel Future Fight, and Marvel: Avengers Alliance, among others.

Needless to say, Jane Foster’s big screen return in the fourth Thor movie is now one of the most anticipated moments of the MCU Phase 4.
