The Netflix film Bird Box certainly inspired fear and an infamous social media challenge. However, it looks like the story of Sandra Bullock’s character isn’t over quite yet. A sequel to Bird Box has just been confirmed and it’s set to be released later in 2019.

Josh Malerman is the author behind the novel Bird Box which was adapted into the Netflix film. Malerman has announced that the second book is titled Malorie and will focus on Sandra Bullock’s character as well as the mysterious creatures that have terrified audiences last December.

Malorie (and Boy and Girl, hopefully) will return in the ‘Bird Box’ sequel.

In the film, people were greatly concerned with the fate of Boy and Girl, who were later given the names Tom and Olympia. However, Malerman confirms that Malorie isn’t about the children. Instead, the second novel will continue to focus on their mother and her continuing struggle to survive.

“In the time between ‘Bird Box‘ coming out and the time since I’ve been writing ‘Malorie‘, I’ve been asked a ton of times: people want to know what happened with Boy and Girl. But as much as I care about Boy and Girl, this isn’t their story. The ‘Bird Box’ world is Malorie’s story, and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better,” he said.

Although they found safety, Malorie and the kids will be in danger again soon.

In the film, Malorie and the children finally made it to Rick’s refuge where a community of blind people has survived for several years. However, the sequel will not focus on the safe place with its lush greenery and an army of birds. Instead, Malorie will plunge the characters back into danger and possibly feature some terrifying encounters with the creatures.

“They’ve left there,” Malerman reveals. “Similar in that they’re trying to make things work. It’s not like it opens with them in paradise.”

Malorie is the second Bird Box novel. It will be available through Penguin/Random House starting October 1, 2019.
