While being in a relationship can be crazy, it is also fulfilling and amazing all at the same time. Relationships are based on mutual trust, respect and a deep sense of love for each other. Each relationship is different from others but there are lessons to be learned from all of them.

If you are in a relationship, here are a few important things you should keep in mind:

16. You need to do things you don’t want to do

Support your partner by participating in his/her hobbies and yes, even family gatherings. You may not like to attend your own family dinners but your partner does. Compromise on what you’re willing to do so it doesn’t cause tension.

15. Being close takes a lot of time

Closeness is a case to case basis. It’s different for everyone. Just because your best friend and her boyfriend hit it off instantly after they met, doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the same for you and your significant other.

14. It’s hard

Anyone who’s ever been in a relationship never said it was a walk in the park. It takes a lot of hard work, patience and adjustments.

13. Intimacy is very important

While sex is not the most important aspect of a relationship, it is still essential that you have physical contact with your partner. Sex is a means of connecting with someone on an entirely different level, besides physical and emotional. It also separates you from simply being friends and lovers.

12. Communicate!

The key to a successful relationship is communication. The reason a lot of misunderstandings and fights occur between partners is because they don’t talk to each other. While you might find it difficult to blurt out your feelings, it’s imperative that you do.

11. Honesty is the best policy

There’s a reason your parents kept telling you to never tell a lie or keep secrets. Be transparent and open with your partner if you want him or her to trust you fully.

10. Your partner isn’t who you dreamed of

We all have ideal partners we created in our heads and they may not be the ones we end up with. But that’s not to say that the ones we’re with now won’t work out.

9. You don’t need to feel complete

The common mistake people make when they get into relationships is that they look at the other person to “make them whole” thinking that it will make them happy. You can’t be truly happy unless you feel contented with yourself.

8. You will fight

And sometimes, those fights can be about something stupid. This is perfectly normal in a relationship. Just remember not to turn them into big arguments.

7. You need your me time

You can’t always be together. Spending some me time is not only good for you but for your partner as well. You both don’t want to lose your individuality just because you’re glued to the hip.

6. Relationships don’t last forever

Sadly, some relationships need to end for your own good.

5. You will think about your ex

Just because you have a new partner doesn’t mean your dating history is erased, too. Your ex, whether good or bad, would have helped you learn lessons you’re using on your new relationship.

4. You might hate each other at times

Again, this is perfectly normal. You can love a person and not like them at certain times of the relationship.

3. Cheating is very easy

Cheating on your partner is very easy. It is actually saying no to that temptation that is hard. If your partner wants to cheat on you, he will cheat on you.

2. Usually, the opinion of friends and loved ones don’t matter

You’re the one in the relationship and not them, so ultimately only you can tell if you should still be pursuing it or not.

1. Love isn’t enough

There are other factors such as trust, respect, honesty and timing. You may love someone so deeply but the timing just isn’t right.
