The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has become an international caliphate, which is an Islamic government led by a person believed to be a successor to the prophet Muhammad. It took 14 months for its leader to establish himself as a ruler “by the order of God”.

There is much to fear about ISIS. The beheading of victims, killings and other barbaric acts seem to be endless and done without a drop of good will — heartless. They are probably the most feared group in all of the world simply because we never know what they are capable of doing.

Despite this, soldiers and military forces are sent to fight them. It is their responsibility to protect their people so even if it is hard to leave their families and risk their lives, they have to do it. Men are expected to fight while women are expected to stay home and take care of the children, but that is not how some Kurdish women see the situation.

Thousands of women have joined the Kurdish People’s Defense Units to fight ISIS. Their goal is to provide humanitarian assistance to help local populations. These women also advocate gender equality and the restoration of women’s roles in Kurdistan that had been taken away.

In an interview below, a 20-year old woman named Zozan Cudi bravely answers questions about her journey as a soldier and what she thinks about ISIS. What is most striking in the interview is her response when asked if she fears ISIS. Her answer, a fast and convincing NO. Find out why in the video below.
