It can’t be denied that more and more people, including adults, have embraced the hobby of collecting action figures. However, many new collectors do not know the basics of taking good care of their growing collection, leading to the depreciation of the pieces’ value or deterioration of their appearance.

Whether your action figure collection is composed of DC or Marvel superheroes, characters from the “Star Wars” or “G.I. Joe” franchise, or NBA basketball superstars, they deserve the proper care. After all, the pieces don’t only remind of your childhood: You also spent a good amount of money and effort in acquiring them. Hence, you must make sure that they are well-taken care of, whether you intend to sell them in the future or simply delight your eyes.

To help you with this, here are some of the most basic things that you should bear in mind in order to preserve the value and beauty of the pieces in your growing collection.

1. Avoid handling them too often.

Hardcore action figure collectors know too well that it is a no-no to open the original packaging of an action figure as doing so will result in the depreciation of its monetary value. However, some collectors cannot resist the urge to open the box of a piece, especially if they don’t intend to sell it in the future anyways.

Whether you prefer removing your action figures from their respective boxes or not, it is important to bear in mind that you should avoid handling too often. This is because the hands have natural oils that may be good for your skin but harmful to your collection as they can cause them (or their boxes) to discolor.

2. Don’t expose them to direct sunlight.

Another common mistake action figure collectors make is placing their collection in a place where the pieces are directly hit by sunlight. Some action figure collectors are unaware that UV rays can cause harm to their collection. Apart from the fact that the UV rays exposure result in discoloration, they cause the pieces to become brittle and cracked over time as well.

3. Store them in a place with average humidity.

The more humid a place where you store or display your figures, the more they are prone to rotting and corrosion. After all, humidity is the amount of moisture in the air. However, remember that low humidity may also cause your figures to become dry and crack so you need to store or display them in a place with the right amount of humidity.
