There is little doubt that bees are important to the environment. These fuzzy little buzzers are responsible for pollinating plants around the world. Without bees, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy our favorite fruits and vegetables. Luckily, there are simple ways that you can help bees from your own home.
The Honeybee Conservancy has revealed that honeybee populations are currently declining and it could be bad for us humans. In line with that, the organization has provided some simple tips on how people can ensure the bees’ survival today and in the future. Here are eight easy ways you can help the honeybees.
1. Avoid harmful pesticides.
This is certainly a no-brainer. Synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides can get rid of pests but also be dangerous to bees.
The best option is to look for organic alternatives and spray pesticides at night when bees are not active. You can avoid chemicals in the neonicotinoid family, which is especially harmful to bees.
2. Add more green to your surroundings.
One of the reasons why bee populations are declining is the lack of habitat. However, you can help by adding more plants around you.
You don’t need a lot of space for these plants. You can easily add a few potted plants in your apartment or outside the house.
3. Build a home for bumble bees.
Honeybees live in hives. However, there are other bees that don’t and may need your help. Try buying a “bee hotel” online or build your own for these little critters. Although they don’t make honey, they can still help pollinate plants.
4. Create a bee bath.
It’s like a bird bath but for bees. Fill it with clean water that the tiny insects can drink after a long day of pollination.
5. Plant some trees.
Contrary to popular belief, bees actually get most of the nectar they gather from trees instead of smaller flowering plants. Trees have several great benefits, one of which is being helpful to bees.
6. Make your garden bee-friendly.
Did you know that there are flowers that are not beneficial to bees? For instance, hybrid flowers are sterile and don’t have a lot of pollen. Avoid hybrid or double flowers and make sure to leave an undisturbed plot for ground-nesting bees.
7. Buy products from a local beekeeper.
Beekeepers are more likely to work with a controlled number of bees and can provide you with awesome bee products. In addition to that, you’re helping your own community while helping the bees around you.
8. Sponsor a hive.
Don’t have enough space for your own hive? The Honeybee Conservancy, who came up with these simple bee care tips, is working to install stocked honeybee hives around the country. It’s a simple way to support bees and help the environment.
