Who would’ve thought that linen, like flat sheets, could get so much attention on the Internet? Just a few weeks ago, a viral tweet about millennials “killing” flat sheets circulated the Internet.

Its use and importance seemed to have been forgotten by the generation nowadays. The tweet surprisingly gained over 20,000 retweets and over 71,000 likes. So much for a debacle about flat sheets, right?

So now you ask: what exactly is a flat sheet?

A flat sheet goes on top of a fitted sheet. It is tucked tightly between the mattress and the box spring at the foot of the bed. If you’re a frequent traveler used to checking in hotels every trip, most likely, you may have encountered flat sheets. So, if you’re still skeptical about the use of a flat sheet, here are reasons you might want to rethink that.

#1. Flat sheets prevent your top sheets from getting dirty.

If you’re lying down, flat sheets are the buffer between your skin and the comforter. Vicky Fulop, CCO and co-founder of Brooklinen, said in an interview with Today HOME.

“Traditionally, top sheets are meant to keep your comforter and heavy blankets from getting dirty since those items are bigger and may be harder or more expensive to clean.”

Instead of laundering your heavy sheets every now and then, flat sheets can actually prevent you from doing so!

#2. Flat sheets help you control temperature.

If you’re feeling hot at night, just remove the comforter sitting on top of your flat sheet and you’re good to go. You won’t even have to wake up to adjust the temperature on the AC unit.

#3. Flat sheets cover the box spring.

Duvets usually don’t cover the box spring and that’s why you need to add an additional bed skirt. That’s just additional cost and washing for you. Flat sheets or no flat sheets, we all just want a good night’s sleep.
