If you tuned in to watch the fifth episode of Game of Thrones Season 8, you were probably shocked by the destruction of King’s Landing. However, the sack of the capital had already been prophesied a long time ago since both Daenerys Targaryen and Bran Stark saw what would happen in two separate visions.

Back in the second season, Daenerys Targaryen was stuck in Qarth where her dragons were taken away by Pyat Pree and brought to the House of the Undying. Daenerys ventured into the Palace of Dust where she sees several visions including the ruined Red Keep covered in snow.

Although people initially believed that the throne room was covered in snow, indicating that winter has arrived in King’s Landing, the latest episode The Bells may have confirmed that it is in fact ashes and not snow.

Interestingly, Dany approaches the Iron Throne in her vision but turns away just as she is about to touch it when she hears the cries of her dragons.

Dany isn’t the only one who saw the possible destruction of King’s Landing. Bran Stark also saw what would happen to the Red Keep in the Season 6 episode Blood of My Blood. While Meera continues pulling Bran as they flee the wights, Bran’s visions continued and it included a dragon flying over King’s Landing.

Fans might also point out that Bran’s vision, which showed the death of the Mad King Aerys Targaryen, hinted at Daenerys possibly finishing what her father wanted to do with King’s Landing: “Burn them all.” This could also confirm that Dany has turned into the Mad Queen who is ready to rule through fire and blood.

It might simply be a neat coincidence. Nevertheless, it is good to know that we now just what Dany and Bran’s visions actually meant after all this time.

The Game of Thrones Season 8 finale will air on HBO on May 19.
