‘Gladiator 2’ Confirmed To Take Place 25 Years After Original Film

Are you ready to go back to the arena with Maximus?

  • The beloved 2000 movie is getting a sequel set two decades after the death of Maximus Decimus Meridius.
  • Ridley Scott will return to direct the movie which could follow the story of Lucius, the nephew of the tyrannical emperor Commodus.
  • Russell Crowe might reprise his role as the Spaniard.

It has been almost 20 years since Russell Crowe asked the world if they were entertained in Gladiator. Now the sequel to the beloved Ridley Scott film has been confirmed and is expected to take place 25 years after Maximus defeated the tyrannical Commodus.

The highly anticipated sequel was previously announced in November 2018 although there were no further updates since then. Luckily, producers Laurie MacDonald and Walter F. Parkes have just revealed that Gladiator 2 is already in development and has already found a writer to work on the screenplay.

Laurie MacDonald and Walter F. Parkes are currently promoting their new film Men In Black: International but the pair are clearly excited about their next project. When asked about Gladiator 2, the producers admitted that it is currently in development.

“We’re working with Ridley [Scott], that’s one we wouldn’t touch unless we felt in a way to do it was legitimate. We’re working with an amazing writer as well, Peter Craig,” MacDonald revealed.

“It picks up the story 30 years later… 25 years later,” Parkes added.

Peter Craig is known for his work on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and 2 as well as 12 Strong which starred Chris Hemsworth. In addition to Gladiator 2, Craig is also writing the screenplay for another high-profile sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

A nice reminder that Lucius somehow saved his uncle from certain death.

The first Gladiator film was released in 2000 and followed Russell Crowe’s Maximus, a general who is chosen by the Emperor to succeed him as regent. However, the emperor is murdered by his own son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), who also had Maximus’ family killed. Although Maximus survived, he was taken by slavers and sold to a gladiator trainer before becoming a famous fighter.

The premise of Gladiator 2 has not yet been revealed but it is believed to take place at the time of Lucius’ reign as the emperor. In the original film, Lucius is Commodus’ nephew and the son of his sister Lucilla. Lucius admired Maximus and it is possible that he will continue to honor the fallen gladiator in the sequel.
