As if robbing wasn’t bad enough, this white guy did it six times – while disguising as an African American man. He did his crimes while wearing a mask that is so lifelike the cops initially arrested the wrong guy. Even the accused man’s mother, who saw the photo of the robbery suspect on TV, thought it was indeed her son.
Fortunately, the right guy eventually got arrested.
30-year-old Conrad Zdzierak pleaded guilty in Hamilton Country Ohio to one count of aggravated robbery and five counts of robbery.
Now he is facing up to 35 years in prison as a consequence of his crimes.
Christopher McDowell, Zdzierak’s lawyer, said:
“Conrad apologizes to everyone, is sorry for any harm he has caused and accepts responsibility for his actions.”
Zdzierak stole almost $15,000 after robbing four banks, a credit union, and a pharmacy.
Witnesses identified the robber as a black man and it was later confirmed by surveillance footage.
Later, the wrong man was accused. The prosecutor’s office, however, refuses to give the identity of the man.
Zdzierak was eventually arrested at a hotel. His girlfriend alerted the authorities after finding two masks and some money among his belongings.
As it turns out, Zdzierak purchased the masks from SPFXmasks, a company based in Van Nuys, California.
Their official website tells us that they create and sell silicone masks that “look and behave like real flesh and muscle.”
Owner Rusty Slusser said that their masks are often used for movies, stage shows, and Halloween.
He also pointed out:
“We do not condone any illegal activity with our masks.”
So yes, it’s a good thing that the right culprit is now behind bars at last. We do not doubt he would still rob more banks and establishments in the near future if his girlfriend didn’t turn him over to the police.
