This is probably not what these teenagers expected in chemistry class. A high school teacher was arrested in California after forcibly cutting her student’s hair. Strangely, she was singing the national anthem during the incident.

The incident took place at the University Preparatory High School in Visalia, California where Margaret Gieszinger called a male student to the front of the class. Once the teenager sat down on the chair she prepared, the teacher began chopping off chunks of his hair. As she did so, she sang the national anthem while throwing the hair behind her. Gieszinger was “removed” from the classroom and arrested after another student posted a video of the incident on Reddit.

He might be smiling but that young man is terrified of his teacher.

According to Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward, the 52-year-old teacher was charged with battery, assault, cruelty to a child, and false imprisonment. She could face up to three and a half years in jail if convicted.

School principal Eric Thiessen confirmed that Gieszinger “will not return” to the school after the incident. He added that the other teachers are “deeply concerned for the students who were subjected to [Gieszinger’s] disturbing behavior.”

The school has called on mental health counselors to help students. However, the teenager who received the haircut is being represented by an attorney.

Gieszinger also tried to forcibly cut a female student’s hair.

Mark Vogt is the attorney who represents the student whose hair was cut. According to Vogt, the teenager volunteered for the haircut because he was worried about his classmates.

“He thought, I don’t know what’s going on, and it might as well be him because if he doesn’t sit down she’s never going to stop and he’s a little worried what she’s going to do. He cooperated to get it over with, in a way.”

Gieszinger’s husband has reportedly stated that the California teacher’s behavior during the incident is “out of her character.”

“It’s not her. It’s not who she is. So I don’t know what was going on with her. I don’t have any clue as to why she did that.”
