Young kids definitely have a short attention span. They’re always restless for the most part.

If you’re a teacher, you really have to work hard to make sure that they will listen to your lessons and do their activities. Now just imagine if you’re teaching mathematics which, quite admittedly, is not the most interesting subject for most kids.

Well math teacher Bethany Lambeth found a creative solution to help her students behave and focus.

This educator from Wake County came up with a remarkably out-of-the-box idea of installing cycling machines in the students’ desks. Pedaling, according to her, helps children to stop fidgeting and focus on calculating.

And the strategy seems to be working.

Lambeth shared:

“I think the world is changing a lot and the kids need to be able to do something different. What we’ve been doing is not necessarily working.

“Before, they were drumming on their desks, they were touching other people, they don’t do that anymore. Their feet are getting the movement out. There has been a huge increase in the quality of our student’s work and a decrease in the amount of missing work.

“(The kids) are not picking on each other, they are not needing to walk around, they are not needing to go explore, they are able to get their activity out and get their work done.”

“It keeps me exercising and focused,” one of the students said.

“It keeps me exercising and focused.”

Another student, who has pedaled 5.5 miles and burned 133 calories – before it was even 10 AM – added:

“I’m a really energetic person, so this takes all my energy out.”

One student commented “I’m a really energetic person, so this takes all my energy out.”

The desk cycles cost $150 each and were provided by private donors.

Do you think schools should start equipping student desks with these cycles? Well, I think I need one myself here at home! This could be an excellent tool so I can work and exercise at the same time.
