- According to the photographer, a volunteer informed him that the animals are both widowed and they often meet to “comfort” each other.
- Thousands of netizens on social media have been touched by the beautiful photos and the heartwarming story behind them.
A picture, as they say, paints a thousand words – and this set truly tells an interesting story. Captured by a wildlife photographer, these photos went viral on social media after netizens felt touched by the closeness of two penguins who, apparently, are both widowed.
Tobias Baumgaertner recently posted these heartwarming pictures on his Instagram page and it has since gained a lot of attention online. According to Tobias, he spotted the two penguins watching the lights in the suburbs of St Kilda in Melbourne, Australia last year.

In his Instagram caption, Tobias said:
“During times like this, the truly lucky ones are those that can be with the person/people they love most… These two Fairy penguins poised upon a rock overlooking the Melbourne skyline were standing there for hours, flipper in flipper, watching the sparkling lights of the skyline and ocean.”
“Pain has brought them together,” wrote the photographer.

Tobias said that a volunteer told him that both of the penguins have previously lost their partners and so now they “meet regularly comforting each other and standing together for hours watching the dancing lights of the nearby city.”

Numerous netiens have since expressed appreciation for Tobias’ snapshots, with many calling them as “absolutely adorable.” Others even commented that the images – and the lovely backstory- made them cry.
