Retired Priest Says Church Just Invented Hell To Control People

  • Retired American priest Bishop John Shelby Spong believes hell has only been “created” by the church to control people.
  • “Religion is always in the control business,” he said.
  • Spong also added that the truth of God “cannot be bound “in any human system.”

Do you believe in hell? Well one retired priest from the United States he doesn’t. And he claims the concept has only been invented by the church to help them control people.

Bishop John Shelby Spong is urging others to rethink Christian doctrines because not everything they’ve been taught is true. “Religion is always in the control business and that’s something people don’t really understand, it’s a guilt-producing control business,” he said in a media interview.

Hell? It’s entirely fictional, According to Bishop John Shelby Spong.

Spong further went on, saying hell doesn’t really exist. He declared:

“If you have heaven as a place where you’re rewarded for your goodness and hell as a place where you’re punished for your evil, then you sort of have control of the population… So they create this fiery place which has quite literally scared the hell out of a lot of people.”

Asked if he really thinks hell is just an invention by the church, he didn’t hesitate to reply:

“Yes, I think the church fired its furnace hotter than anybody else.”

The retired priest also has a different definition of “born again.”

“The church doesn’t like for people to grow up because you can’t control grown-ups,” he said. “That’s why we talk about being born again, when you’re born again ur still a child. People don’t need to be born again they need to grow up. They need to accept their responsibility for themselves and the world.”

The truth of God…

“The idea that the truth of God can be bound in any human system, by any human creed, by any human book is beyond imagination for me,” Spong likewise remarked. “God is not a Christian or a Jew or a Hindu or a Buddhist. All of those are human systems that human beings have created.”
