  • Maurizio Cattelan duct-taped a banana to a wall, named it “Comedian” and priced it for $120,000 to $150,000.
  • A couple from Miami purchased one of the pieces, saying it will become an “iconic historical object.”

If you’re a frequent social media user, we’re sure you’ve stumbled upon this image on your feed: a banana duct-taped on the wall. Pretty absurd, right? Well, wait until you hear what it’s really all about!

In case you have no idea so far, the taped banana is actually a piece of “art” which was showcased at Art Basel, an art festival in Miami. Done by artist Maurizio Cattelan, the banana is part of an installation called “Comedian.”

Yes, this is a “work of art!”

The said conceptual artwork has since gained a lot of mixed reactions on the internet and people couldn’t help but bash it, with many calling it “ridiculous.”

Despite all the outrage and debate, a well-off couple actually shelled out a huge amount of money to purchase one of the three available pieces.

Billy and Beatrice Cox of Miami did spend $120,000 to buy the art.

Why would any sane person ever do that, you ask?

Well according to the reports, the couple recognizes the Comedian’s strangeness and they are planning about donating it to a museum.

The couple believes Cattelan’s piece will become iconic.

The couple defended:

“We knew we were taking a risk, but ultimately we sense that Cattelan’s banana will become an iconic historical object.”

Aside from the pair, 2 other buyers willingly bought Cattelan’s limited edition pieces for $120,000 to $1500,000.

In addition to the taped banana, they also received a certificate of authenticity along with some instructions about how to replace the fruit once its ripe.

Of course, it didn’t take long before everyone began spoofing the Catellan’s banana.

Meanwhile, one of the duct-taped pieces was eaten by performance artist David Datuna.
