  • Deshraj Jyot Singh, 74, sold his house to fund his granddaughter’s studies.
  • His grandchild wants to be a teacher someday and he wants to help make her dream come true.
  • The story later went viral online and netizens helped raise money for him, amounting to Rs 24 lakh.

An elderly man from India has been hailed as a hero by netizens after he sold his house to help fund his granddaughter’s education. 74-year-old Deshraj Jyot Signh works as an auto driver. Despite his meager earnings, he didn’t let that stop him from ensuring his grandchild would be able to finish her studies as a teacher.

According to him, his granddaughter asked if she had to quit school after her father, who is Deshraj’s son, passed away. The determined grandfather, however, just told her to keep going and he will do what he can.

“I started working long hours,” said Deshraj. “I’d leave home at 6 AM and drive my auto till midnight. Only then, would I be able to make 10,000 Rs a month. After spending 6000 on their school fees and stationery, I’d be left with barely 4000 to feed my family of 7.”

The good grandfather shared further:

“Educating her in another city was way beyond my capacity, but I had to fulfill her dreams… at any cost. So, I sold our house and paid her fees. Then, I sent my wife, daughter-in-law and other grandkids to our relatives’ home in our village, while I continued staying in Mumbai without a roof.”

Deshraj ended up sleeping in his auto instead.

“I can’t wait for her to become a teacher, so that I can hug her and say, ‘You’ve made me so proud.’ She’s going to be the first graduate in our family,” he added.

Deshraj’s story eventually went viral on social media and kindhearted people took it upon themselves to help the man from Mumbai. A fundraiser was immediately organized with a target of Rs 20 lakhs so he can buy a new house. Donors went beyond that and the total money raised reached Rs 24 lakh.

In a Facebook post by Humans of Bombay, we read:

“The support Deshraj ji has received is immense! Because you all went out of your way to help him, he now has a roof over his head, and will be able to educate his granddaughter! Thank you so much ♥️”
