Police Dog Fired For Being Too Friendly, Gets Fancy New Job

Dogs are not just man’s best friend, they also make great partners in police work. Now, no matter how much we love them, not all our canine friends are fit to become police dogs. Just take Gavel, a German Shepherd from Queensland, Australia, for example.

Dear Gavel was unfortunately let go from his police dog training when he was ruled, well, too friendly. The pooch was just too sociable and nice to scare away the bad guys.

The staff at the official residence of the Queensland governor, where Gavel was training, thought the dog had a better future performing a different job.

The staff decided to give Gavel the new title of Vice-Regal Dog. Fancy, huh? The designation was made official earlier this year.

The office of Governor Paul de Jersey told the BBC:

“He has outgrown four ceremonial coats, undergone a career change (his official title is now Gavel VRD, ‘Vice-Regal Dog’), and brought untold joy to the lives of the governor, Mrs de Jersey, Government House staff, and the thousands of Queenslanders who have since visited the estate.”

It looks like Gavel has found his real calling.

The Governor of Queensland’s Facebook page and Instagram account have been posting details about Gavel and his career journey so far. Word has it that the pooch has been performing an excellent job.

Part of Gavel’s official duties include attending functions and welcoming guests to the Queensland’s Government House, all while wearing his own official ceremonial coat with the state’s coat of arms. Plus, of course, being his adorable and highly social self.

Vice-Regal Dog Gavel has gained quite a fanbase.

The Governor of Queensland Facebook page posted:

“There were lots of comments from people at Open Day on the weekend expressing how much they enjoyed following via social media Gavel’s progression from aspiring police pooch to Vice-Regal Dog. The truth is that we at Government House have loved sharing his story with you!”

Oh, Gavel, we’re so proud of you!
