The first official trailer of Dora and the Lost City of Gold recently dropped and from the looks of it, Hollywood is giving the Nickelodeon children’s show an edgier treatment compared with the look and feel of the source material.

As the trailer shows us, Dora is already in her teens and she’s going on a jungle adventure. The film obviously has an action-comedy theme and while that idea sounds like an original idea, someone actually did it first.

You see back in 2012, College Humor released a parody video on their official YouTube channel starring Ariel Winter. The short film features – wait for it – a teen Dora going on an action adventure.

The similarities between the parody and the upcoming blockbuster are just so hard to ignore that some netizens are convinced that Hollywood probably stole elements from the YouTube short.

Netizens who’ve seen both videos just couldn’t help but compare the two.

Over at YouTube, one user wrote:

“I think Paramount and Nickelodeon took College Humor’s joke too seriously.”

Another pointed out:

“A joke in 2012 is now an actual thing in 2019.”

Someone also commented the “fake trailer looks better than the official trailer.”

In 2013, College Humor also released a 3-part adventure series called Dora the Explorer and the Destiny Medallion.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold will hit theaters across the world by August 2.

The film’s synopsis reads:

“Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, nothing could prepare Dora (Isabela Moner) for her most dangerous adventure ever – High School.

“Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (Danny Trejo), Diego (Jeffrey Wahlberg), a mysterious jungle inhabitant (Eugenio Derbez), and a rag tag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Peña) and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost city of gold.”
