Smoothies are healthy and delicious. It is the quickest way to add nutrients to your body as a full meal, a snack, or a pick-me-up.

But one woman from China took the smoothie health craze to a whole new level. Instead of enjoying its benefits and taste as a drink, she decided to take it up a notch and injected it straight into her veins. Yes, you read that right.

The 51-year-old woman from the Hunan province in the south of China, known only as Zeng, had reportedly developed an interest in unconventional healthy treatments. In a bizarre bid to stay healthy, Zeng made a smoothie from 20 different fruits and then injected the concoction into her body using an intravenous infusion drip.

She said:

“I had thought fresh fruits were very nutritious and it would not do me harm by injecting them into my body. I had no idea that would get me into such trouble.”

Zeng immediately started to feel itchy and noticed a rise in temperature, but ignored her symptoms. When her husband noticed that she was in distress, that’s when she told him what she did. Zeng was then taken to the hospital and admitted to intensive care.

It turns out she’d suffered liver, kidney, heart, and lung damage and was at risk of multiple organ failure. She also had a high chance of developing sepsis.

Doctors put the woman on dialysis and gave her antibiotics and anti-clotting medicine to help nurse her back to health.

The woman remained in intensive care for five days before being moved to the kidney unit at the Affiliated Hospital of Xiangnan University.

Believe it or not, it seems there’s a lot of curious people on the internet who have asked for advice about similar procedures. One Reddit user asked if it was okay to inject orange juice into their veins, while another asked what would happen if they injected Fruit Punch Gatorade.
