Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological condition characterized by severe anxiety, nightmares, recurrent thoughts about a frightening incident, or flashbacks. It occurs in inviduals who have experienced or who have witnessed traumatic or life threatening events, such as military veterans, rape, or torture victims.

Several war veterans experience PTSD and suicidal thoughts. A study shows that in the United States, approximately 22 war veterans commit suicide everyday. Although there is no doubt that these soldiers are brave, imagine living a life of constant battle to defend your life and the lives of other people. When they are finally sent home, these soldiers have to undergo a huge change just to get back to their normal lives. For some, this is not an easy task as some soldiers are psychologically scarred. Unfortunately, this may just be one of the many negative consequences of war.

People who don’t know what its like to live in this kind of situation may not readily understand the extent of the negative effects of PTSD and suicide. Devin Mitchell, a photographer and a Sociology student, travelled across the US to collate the stories of the war veterans. He did this to open the minds of people as to what these soldiers are going through. He started the Veteran Vision Project, which illustrates how the soldiers feel after their military service through pictures.

Mitchell’s photos captured who the soldiers are in and out of their uniforms, and allowed them to show their own identities and tell their own stories.

Below are some samples of the Mitchell’s striking photography, and a mini documentary about some of the soldier’s battle against PTSD and suicide:

Blogger Matt Diaz, 22, took social media abuzz when he posted his half-naked photos on his Tumblr blog. Diaz lost about 270 lbs, and has since carried excess skin all over his body. While he religiously documented his weight loss journey, which started when he was 16 years old, he never revealed how he looks like under his shirt. For him, the excess skin on his body are flaws that he is too scared to expose. But then, he realized that he cannot promote positivism and acceptance in his blog if he himself is not ready to embrace his imperfection. Just recently, he decided to show his body to the world saying,

'I'm really scared to put this up. But I think it's important for me to share this with you guys, because this is who I am.'

Photo taken before Matt lost 270 lbs.

'Beauty is only skin deep.' True to the words of Sir Thomas Overbury in his poem 'A Wife,' another remarkable story teaches us that character is more important than physical beauty and Lizzie Velasquez is here to enlighten us.

Velasquez was dubbed as 'The World's Ugliest Woman' in the internet when she was 17 years old which made her an online sensation. She was born with two rare conditions,  'Marfan syndrome' and 'Lipodystrophy.' She is not able to gain weight no matter what she eats. At 26, she only weighs 60 lbs or 27 kg. She is blind in one eye while the other is visually impaired. Velasquez was 17 when she stumbled upon a YouTube video of herself named as 'The Ugliest Woman in the World.'

'I was shocked,' Velasquez recalls, 'but it wasn't until I started to read the comments that my stomach really sank.'

Children view adults as mentors. How an adult acts and reacts to life situations can greatly influence a child's identity. We can all be considered teachers in the eyes of a child, as we share basic information that can help increase their knowledge.

However, the children today are more advanced, maybe because they now have access to unlimited information that are just one click away. But there is more to life that needs to be learned- things that only experience can teach, experiences that can help children become wiser.

This inspiring video depicts the difference between wisdom and knowledge. A simple yet powerful story that is clearly and cleverly presented. It is a story about a mother, her daughter...and a pineapple.
