  • Nurse Sergio Humberto Padilla Hernandez, 28, recorded some touching words for his family hours before COVID-19 claimed his life.
  • In the video, he appears to believe that he will recover, even when his condition has worsened.
  • Just months before he got sick, his parents, twin sisters, and one of his nieces also contracted the virus.
  • Like one of his sisters, Dolores, Sergio did not survive the disease.

Sergio Humberto Padilla Hernandez, a nurse at the Hospital Angeles Cuauhtémoc, recorded a few loving words of farewell for his family several hours before he passed away because of COVID-19.

He hoped he would recover and recorded loving words for his family. In the recording, he said, “I will recover, God willing. We will move forward.”

“Whatever happens, you will always be looking out for my best interests, always. I love you and you are in my heart.”

The 28-year-old nurse passed away on November 6, just hours after they intubated him for COVID-19. Sergio’s death is not the first in his family. His sister Dolores died at 30 on August 8. Before that, his family – including his parents, Dolores’ twin sister, and her daughter – all contracted the disease.

Sergio’s wife, Denise, and their 5-year-old son, Sergio Hernandez III, remained safe.

According to his cousin, Adalberto Hernandez, Sergio loved helping people.

He couldn’t work at the hospital since his family got sick in July, but he returned to the hospital in mid-September.

Unfortunately, after he returned to the same hospital where his sister died, he contracted the same virus. On October 22, he tested positive for COVID-19. He stayed home, but his condition worsened on November 5. “At that point, all the tests showed that he had lost 90% of his lung function,” Adalberto said.

That same night, Sergio filmed himself to send a few words to his family even though the doctors were feeling confident because “he didn’t have prior health conditions, he was young, healthy.”

“This is just so tragic to us. It’s like we lost a brother. Now that we watch it again, it served almost as a goodbye.”

Adalberto said that the video breaks their heart but makes them appreciate life. He also shared how sad he feels for this mother, who lost one child after another.

“The mom, this is such a fresh wound to lose a child, and then now you have to watch another child perish,” he said. “It’s just unimaginable.”
