These poor little penguins in Philip Island, Australia are cold because of an oil spill. Their feathers stick together whenever they dip into the oil-slicked ocean, thus allowing the water to enter the inner layer of their bodies.

So a couple of nurses talked to Alfred “Alfie” Date, Australia’s oldest man, who lives in a retirement home on the New South Wales Central Coast. Alfie happens to be an experienced knitter so they turned to him for help in keeping the poor penguins warm.

This generous man agreed to put his aging hands to good use and made adorable sweaters for the penguins. Just take a look at what Grandpa Alfie made for the little guys…

Seriously, isn’t this too cute for words? This has got to be the most adorable thing I’ve seen all week. I want to save this image and use it as my wallpaper. Heck, I want THOSE sweaters. I wish Grandpa Alfie can make me one.

His good deed got around and soon Victoria’s Philip Island Penguin Foundation is besieged with penguin sweaters donated by knitters from all over the world. As of present, they are not asking for any donations since there is more than enough supply of sweaters to keep the penguins warm, at least for now. Check out the website for more info.

Share this to make everyone aware of the plight of the little penguins and other animals affected by oil spills.
