6 Mistakes That Prevent You From Grilling The Perfect Steak

Summer is certainly the best time to have a barbeque with family and friends. But are you confident about your grilling skills when you need to make the perfect steak? Most people are guilty of making some sad steaks that are usually undercooked or underseasoned. Luckily, it is easy to avoid these mistakes.

Steaks can be the perfect meal but yes, they can somehow be a bit tricky to prepare. People tend to be cautious about overcooking the meat and end up with a badly undercooked slab.

Here are the mistakes you need to stop doing so you get a perfect steak all the time:

#1. Not giving the meat enough time to thaw

You may be forgiven for wanting to get the grilling done as soon as possible, especially if the steaks have been marinating in the fridge all night. Unfortunately, cold meat also cooks badly, resulting in an undercooked steak that looks good on the outside but is actually raw on the inside. Patience is the key so you really need to wait until the meat is room temperature before throwing it on the grill.

#2. Being too light or too heavy with the seasoning

This can be a bit tricky but we got your back. Experts say that it is better to season the meat then let it sit for about an hour before grilling. This way, the steak has time to absorb the salt, pepper, and other seasonings you want to use. Another option is to marinate the meat hours before grilling.

#3. Forgetting to oil your grill

You don’t want your steak to stick to the grill. So use a paper towel to spread canola oil all over the grates. This will lubricate the grill and allow you to remove the meat easily once it’s done.

#4. Your grill isn’t hot enough

The temperature is important since it ensures that your steak will be properly cooked. Make sure that your burning coals are properly distributed in the grill. Bring the temperature up to 450°F to 500°F for the best results.

#5. You keep touching your steak or moving it around

Do you want those grill marks that indicate you have cooked your meat properly? Then stop touching the steak. Allow the meat to cook for about two to five minutes on one side before flipping it over.

#6. You keep avoiding the thermometer

Some say you can tell if a steak is done simply by looking or touching. However, there is no shame in whipping out a thermometer to be sure that it is cooked right. Rare steaks should be about 120 to 125ºF while you can expect medium-rare meat at 130ºF. A medium should be at 140ºF and medium-well must not go over 150ºF.
