It was a horrifying sight – woman jumps up and lets her boyfriend catch her as she attempts that famous lift in the movie Dirty Dancing, only to crash-land on her neck, which almost snapped from the impact.

Millie Slennett, a 25-year-old dance teacher from Sydney, Australia, had one drink too many when she decided to compete with her sister to see who could pull off that iconic dance move.

So she ran up to boyfriend Conner Justin’s shoulders, who caught her by the hips and lifted her up so she can soar just like Jennifer Grey.

But the two lost their balance and she tipped over Conor’s shoulders, which caused her to crash on her neck.

“It all just went so quickly. When we were at the top, it felt like we were holding it for hours. I had my feet pointed, legs stretched. I thought we’d nailed it,” Millie said.

“I kept trying to lift my legs higher and then they got above my head. It went from fine to not fine within like 0.3 seconds. I didn’t have time to realise I was falling until I hit the floor.”

She said that she rolled on to her side and checked if she could move her fingers and toes since she was aware that she landed badly and it hurt so much. Her family rushed to help her and her mom was holding her head.

“It felt like I had broken all the ribs down my left side. Breathing hurt so much, but I managed to stand up. I found it funny because when I’m in a lot of pain I end up laughing instead.”

She said that the first thing she did when she realized that someone was filming was to ask to see the video and check if they nailed the lift.

When the pain did not subside, the family called an ambulance to have Millie checked.

Considering what happened, doctors couldn’t believe that she was still standing. The CT scan revealed bruising on Millie’s neck, nothing else. Millie has since returned to work after the incident.

“I know I’m so lucky. It could have been so much worse. I could have snapped my neck or done damage to my spine. I could have died,” Millie said.

“I didn’t have my professional cap on. We’d had a few drinks. But I think having some in my system perhaps helped my fall because I was a little bit more relaxed.”

She said that it’s been overwhelming how many people have called her freaking out and checking on her. She advised partygoers to “copy the film by practicing the move in the water first and not with alcohol.”
