Video games are more addictive than ever. While heavy gaming, particularly in boys, can be a warning signal for parents, not everyone who plays many hours a day is at risk for problems. In fact, one teen got more than just eye bags playing his favorite game.
Benjy Fish may be young but he is already ranked among the best in the world at Fortnite. The 15-year-old boy quits school to play games full-time and has since managed to earn £25,000 (US$31,562.13) since turning professional in February this year.
“My mom didn’t think I was all that good at it at first until I woke her up in the middle of the night to say I’d won £10,000 (US$12,624.85) in an online competition against the top players in Europe.”
She suggested that her son could switch to homeschooling and that’s what happened. Benjy added that he can now play until four in the morning and wake up at two in the afternoon. He has tutors to visit him “later in the day to fit in my GCSE work, which I’m going to split over three years instead of the usual two.”
And it’s turned out to be a wise career option for the young teen. Benjy Fish has guaranteed himself another £50,000 (US$63,124.25) by qualifying for this year’s Fortnite World Cup, which boasts a prize pool of £23million (US$29,037,155.00).
The young gamer was qualified for the solos and duos finals. If he managed to win the top prize, he will be taking home roughly £4million (US$5,049,940.00). He said that if he wins, he will use the money to buy a house for himself and his mother.
