Dreams are awesome for it has no limits. Thanks to my dreams, I have become a martial artist, an astronaut, a senator (ugh!), a pilot, and a race car driver, to name a few. Then, a week ago, I dreamt I was a vampire. Really, that was one of the coolest dreams that I’ve ever had.
But what are dreams and why do we have them?
Though science still doesn’t have a definite explanation as to why and how dreams occur, researchers have hypothesized that dreams represent our subconscious desires and wishes, and constitute consolidated images and information gathered during our waking hours.
To put it simply, dreams are like movies that our subconscious minds create when we’re asleep.
According to psychotherapist Jeffrey Sumber, “The meaning of our dreams oftentimes relates to things we are needing to understand about ourselves and the world around us.”
Hence, dreams are symbols, and they ought to tell us something. Scroll down to see the most common dreams and their possible meanings, as interpreted by:
Boxes, in dreams, may pertain to secrets, concealment, and disappointments. It may mean that you are keeping something hidden, or you may fear that someone is keeping a secret from you. Alternatively, if you open a box in your dream, it may mean that you’re ready to reveal a secret. Also, if you open a box and you find it empty, you may be dealing with disappointments in your life.
People commonly dream of the sensation of falling. This may mean that things in your life are getting too way out of control. This may also signify a fear of failure or that some of the risky choices that you’re made in the past are coming back to bite you. If falling is a recurrent dream, you may need to consider anti-anxiety activities such as meditation and yoga.
Cats in dreams may signify spirituality, femininity, and power. This may mean that you need to get in touch with your feminine side, or that you need to embrace confidence, which can ultimately lead to personal spiritual awakening.
Dreaming of teeth may involve appearance, aging, and health. Most people dream of having their teeth breaking or falling out. Such dreams may pertain to fear or anxiety associated with aging or death. These negative feelings may be addressed by maintaining optimism and by living our lives to the fullest. Dreaming of teeth may also mean that you are too concerned with your appearance and not so much about your health.
On a superficial level, ants in our dreams may mean that something is “bugging” us during our waking life. This can be our subconscious mind’s way of telling us to deal with these kinds of things rather than letting them build up. Alternatively, ants in our dreams may signify hard work as ants are known for their sheer diligence. This may mean that you believe teamwork and hard work are necessary to get things done. Dreaming of ants may also mean that you value your relationship with your family and friends.
Dreaming of hair may signify status, sexuality, and freedom. It is possible that you need to work on some aspects of your physical relationships and that it’s just about time for you to embrace your sexuality. Hair in dreams may also indicate that you know exactly where you stand in relation to the people around you. On the other hand, when you dream about long hair, it may mean that you are looking for a sense of freedom; you may just need to remove the restrictions that you might be placing on yourself.
Risk, ambition, and fluidity – these may be represented by water in our dreams. When you dream of water, your subconscious mind may be telling you that you are a person who has huge goals and likes to take risks. The risks may scare you but if you want to go for the big things, you need to take the huge leap despite your fears. Alternatively, dreaming of water may indicate that you love it when life feels fluid and easy and that you long for the day when life will be simple and comfortable.
When you dream about flying, your subconscious mind may be telling you that you are ready to make bold choices in your life. Also, a lot of pressure may come from the waking life and you may seek some form of release. In such instances, dreaming of flying may mean that you are wishing to not only fly away from the problems that are bothering you but also fly above them. Maintaining a positive attitude and keeping strong choices will help you attain such kind of release.
When you dream of a road, your mind may be telling you to keep things simple. You may need to eliminate any drama in your waking life and focus only on your specific journey. Luckily, you believe in fate and you know that the path that you are following will lead you to somewhere wonderful. Have faith, accept your journey, and enjoy the knowledge that everything will work out in the end.
Symbolically, dreaming of mud may represent growth and rebirth. Just like how seeds grow in soil, mud reminds you that you can start over and change the aspect of your life that you are not happy with. However, mud may also represent immobility, and may mean that you are feeling stuck in your current life choices and that it may be time for you move forward. You may also have this inner feeling of unrest, which may require a change in pace.
11. The Color Green
When everything is green in your dreams, you may be in a positive emotional disposition. You love the people around you and you also feel loved in return. This may also be your subconscious mind’s way of telling you to approach each day with passion, that is if you haven’t done that already. Dreaming of the color green may also mean that you are undergoing some form of an emotional healing process. This may take time but support from your family and friends can greatly help.
12. Being Naked in Public
This may strike you as odd, but a lot of people actually dreamed of being naked in public at least once throughout their life. Such dream signifies a universal fear — the fear of being judged. Your subconscious mind may be telling you to accept and love yourself, and be proud of who you are.
Indeed, dreams do tell us a lot of things about ourselves.
