Children can be a handful but not for those passionate about parenthood. And when it comes to having babies, twins are double the fun (instead of double the trouble) for moms and dads who are just dying to have them.

Although there are no guaranteed strategies to conceive twins, there are things that can help increase a woman’s chances of doing so. Heed the tips below if you’re hoping to get pregnant with twins.

1. Check your family history.

It’s good to start with reviewing your family’s history of childbirth since having fraternal twins is believed to run in the family. Check if the women in your family – like your sisters, mother, grandmother, great grandmother – have given birth to fraternal twins. If that’s the case, chances are you have a genetic predisposition to give birth to twins, too.

2. Create and release more eggs.

Fraternal twins develop from two different eggs released at the same time. If you have the tendency for hyperovulation – releasing more than one egg per cycle – then you have a higher chance of having twins. Hyperovulation also occurs for women in their early 30s, so if you want twins, you might consider trying to get pregnant during those years.

3. Consider taking a Cassava supplement.

It is said that taking a Cassava supplement can increase your chances of conceiving twins by as much as 50 percent. This plant releases GnRH hormones, which can fool your brain into thinking there isn’t enough estrogen in your system. In turn, the brain will release gonadotropin, which will then increase ovulation.

4. Get more folate into your system.

Of course, a good diet is always recommended. But if you’re looking to have twins, be sure to take in more folate. Doing so can increase your odds of getting pregnant with twins by as much as 40 percent. Eat more healthy food like asparagus, broccoli, avocado, peas, beans, okra, lentils, and citrus fruits.

5. Add more dairy to your diet.

Another technique that can help is consuming more dairy. Aside from strengthening your bones, dairy has high levels of estrogen. It can significantly increase fertility and can improve your chances of having twins.

6. Breastfeed your babies.

Studies show that when a woman is lactating and breastfeeding, the likelihood of conceiving twins the next time she gets pregnant increases. There are also reports of women who conceived while they were breastfeeding and ended up having twins. A study found the rate of twins to be 11.4 percent among breastfeeding women, as compared to 1.1 percent in non-breastfeeding women.

7. Take regular amounts of calcium magnesium.

Experts say that the right amount of calcium magnesium in your body can help you conceive twins. Calcium magnesium can also increase your chances of having girls, so it’s perfect if you want twin girls. Try adding more almonds, cashews, flax seeds, avocado, and sunflower seeds to your diet.

8. Let your hormones normalize after getting off the pill.

Once you’ve gotten off the pill after deciding you want to get pregnant, give your hormones time to normalize. A couple of months should be enough. After that, your fertility levels should be back to normal, too.

9. Try Maca root.

Maca root is believed to be helpful to both men and women who are trying to have babies. It functions as an adaptogen which promotes healthy reproductive functions in women and can also increase fertility in men.

10. Take in more bromelain.

Don’t throw away that pineapple core just yet. The core contains a chemical called bromelain, which studies show can increase fertility levels. Note that excess bromelain in the system can cause complications during birth, so consume with caution.

11. Keep trying.

Miscarriages are traumatic for women, but studies show that a miscarriage can also increase fertility. If a woman were to get pregnant again after a miscarriage, her odds of getting twins on her next attempt increases.

12. Consult with your doctor about fertility treatments.

If all else fails, you may also consult your doctor about different fertility treatments available. Some fertility treatments can boost ovulation and lead to twins, triplets, or more.
