  • Residents have had enough of tourists taking pictures and making lewd poses with the sign post.
  • The people of the village are known as “Fuckingers”.

A village in the Western Upper part of Austria is set to change its name this coming New Year, as the residents are getting tired of their sign posts getting ridiculed by tourists and featured on social media.

Fucking, which is located at the municipality of Tarsdorf in the Innviertel region, will be renamed Fugging on January 1, 2021. The village’s original name dates back to the 11th century, according to experts.

Residents reportedly have had enough of English-speaking tourists stopping at the sign post at the entrance of the village to have their pictures taken.

Some of the tourist even make lewd poses in front of the sign, which then will get posted on social media.

Tourists even steal the sign posts, which prompted the local authorities to put replacements that are set with theft-resistant concrete.

Andrea Holzner, the mayor of Tarsdorf, the municipality to which the village of Fucking belongs, confirmed the name change.

“I really don’t want to say anything more — we’ve had enough media frenzy about this in the past,” she said in an interview with regional daily Oberoesterreichische Nachrichten.

The villagers, who are known as “Fuckingers”, were already fed up with visitors and their bad jokes, according to Austrian daily Die Presse. But not everyone is happy about the name change.

Some readers of Oberoesterreichische Nachrichten expressed their opinion about it.

“Don’t people have any sense of humor these days?” one of them said.

“They’re getting free publicity — they ought to have been happy to have a funny name,” said another.

The village made it to the news after Austrian novelist Kurt Palm used the place as backdrop for his book, which was later adapted into a film.

The village, which is around 350 kilometers (215 miles) east of Vienna, was said to be first founded by a Bavarian nobleman called Focko in the 6th century. The existence of the place was first documented in 1070 and historical records revealed that Focko’s name was recorded in Latin as Adalpertus de Fucingin.

The name’s spelling has evolved over time, which eventually settled with Fucking in the 18th century. It was supposed to be pronounced with the vowel “oo”, just like in the word “book”. The suffix -ing is supposed to indicate that the name “Fucking” means it is the “(place of) Focko’s people”.

Fucking is not the only place in the world with a highly suggestive name. A village just across the border in Bavaria in Germany is named Petting, while a village in the Czech Republic is named Horni Police.
