Pfizer is reportedly working on a Covid-19 home treatment pill. If things go as planned, it will soon obtain approval from the Food and Drug Administration and may be available in the market by December 2021.

It looks like we’re going to get a Covid-19 treatment pill before the year ends! In an interview with the media, Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer, said that they are currently working on a medicine that could potentially stop the virus after a person exhibits signs of it.

The clinical trials are now underway and the company is hoping that the home oral drug will soon be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Distribution could then begin as early as December 2021 in the United States.

The groundbreaking pill could play a big role in helping treat Covid-19 infection.

In a recent report by the CNBC, we read that the “Covid vaccine pill” has been described as a “part of a class of medicines called protease inhibitors and works by inhibiting an enzyme that the virus needs to replicate in human cells.”

Experts are saying the pill could be a “game-changer because people newly infected with the virus could use it outside of hospitals.”

Aside from Pfizer, pharmaceutical company Oravax Medical is also collaborating with Israeli-American firm Oramed and India-based Premas Biotec in developing an oral vaccine pill. The drug may enter clinical trials by the second quarter of next year.

As Oramed CEO Nadav Kidron shared:

“An oral COVID-19 vaccine would eliminate several barriers to rapid, widescale distribution, potentially enabling people to take the vaccine themselves at home. While ease of administration is critical today to accelerate inoculation rates, an oral vaccine could become even more valuable in the case that a COVID-19 vaccine may be recommended annually like the standard flu shot.”
