There is a Chinese acupressure practice called San Yin Jiao, which involves applying pressure at a specific point in the legs. This technique, when performed correctly before bedtime, allows one to have a peaceful night’s sleep.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Locate the inner ankle bone.
2. Measure four finger breadths up the leg from the inner ankle.
3. Put your thumb at this point, making sure to apply pressure to the depression under the shin bone and not on the bone itself.
4. Apply pressure and massage using a circular motion for five to six seconds, and release for about two seconds. Repeat for about five minutes.
5. Repeat on your other leg.
It is important to note that this technique is painless. Hence, if you feel pain during the procedure, you might be applying pressure at the wrong spot.
According to the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine, the San Yin Jiao method is not only good for people with sleep issues as it can also help alleviate the discomfort associated with menstrual cramps, help relieve bloating and pelvic and urological disorders, and improve digestion. Moreover, it is said that the San Yin Jiao method also promotes good blood flow.
