Viral “Sovereign” Woman Who Refused To Wear Mask Jailed And Fined $2,000

She said the police "have no say" over her as a 'sovereign' woman.

  • Paramjeet Kaur, 41, has recently been sentenced to two weeks imprisonment and fined $2,000 for violating mask rules in Singapore.
  • Kaur went viral last year after two videos surfaced, showing her arguing with locals and the police about her right not to wear masks.
  • She insisted she was a ‘sovereign’ woman who didn’t need to follow the rules.

41-year-old Paramjeet Kaur went viral last year after a video showed her arguing with strangers at the Shunfu Mart in Singapore. In the said footage, she claimed she’s a “sovereign” woman and so she doesn’t have to wear a mask.

Explaining what being a “sovereign” is, Kaur said “It means I have nothing to do with the police, it means I have no contract with the police. They have no say over me.”

“This doesn’t even make any sense,” a man in the background responded. “If you’re a person in Singapore, you have to follow the rules of Singapore.”

Kaur shrugged it off and simply replied “That’s the thing. I’m not a person, I’m ‘we the people’.”

In another incident, Kaur was filmed while she was confronting police officers for allegedly violating safe distancing rules while at the Shunfu Hawker Centre.

Kertar Singh and Mohamed Arshad, Kaur’s attorneys, said that their client rejected masks because she thought wearing them could cause breathing difficulties.

Kaur has since pleaded guilty to two charges: for failure to wear a mask over her nose and mouth while outdoors and for public nuisance.

Moreover, five other charges were considered for Kaur including three counts of Covid-19 regulation breaches, one charge for failure to inform authorities about her chance of home address and another for failure to sign a police statement.

Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam also previously explained Kaur’s claim as a “sovereign” woman, saying:

“There is a movement in the United States, and adherents to that movement, (broadly speaking) reject government, reject the police and any kind of authority… Such people should not live within society – she should not expect any of the benefits that come from this system of governance, including her security, medical care, other benefits.”

On Friday, May 7, Kaur was sentenced to two weeks in jail and was asked to pay a $2,000 fine.
