Each Morning, Her Father Sneaked in Her Room While She Was Sleeping Just To Do One Thing
This is a sad but beautiful story.
Every day, we see images of beautiful men women with perfect skin, gorgeous bodies, and attractive smiles – be it in magazines, films, television, or on the internet. Our minds have been conditioned to stereotype beauty and perceive it the way the media wants us to see it. And, almost always, such perception leads to an unrealistic concept of beauty and a distorted view of one’s own body image.
Struggling with a seemingly undesirable body image is not something that must be treated like a joke. It causes people to have low self-esteem and poor self-confidence and may even lead to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
Eating disorders are not simple matters, either. Surely, those who have struggled with anorexia and bulimia will be able to tell you that. There are a lot of sad stories about them, but there are also an equally significant number of happy ones about people’s journey to recovery and their renewed sense of self-worth.
Take this story about Gemma Walker as an example. Gemma had been suffering from anorexia for several years, and her parents could not do anything about it but watch their daughter die slowly in front of them.
Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by the desire to lose weight despite having an abnormally low body weight.
Gemma had been anorexic for several years.
Her parents had been under constant stress making sure that Gemma remains alive.
Steve, Gemma's father, had to sneak into her room every morning just to make sure that his daughter is still breathing.
Steve said that he and his wife would sit "on the ground next to her bed just to be with her. " They couldn’t do anything.
At 14, Gemma weighed only 62 lbs.
Doctors warned that her condition would deteriorate and she may even die if her diet won't change and the weight loss would continue.
Gemma said: "I felt numb. The days just melted into each other and I wished each day by, hoping that I would just pass peacefully in my sleep."
However, despite the threat to her life, Gemma still refused to eat and stop the weight loss.
She attempted to trick doctors by wearing gym weights on her ankles to make it appear that she gained weight.
For seven years, Gemma was hospitalized numerous times.
Things became worse when Gemma developed depression and began cutting herself.
Then, things changed. she began to eat, but not healthily.
She would binge-eat, sometimes consuming up to 6,500 calories of food within 20 minutes.
Gemma became bullimic and gained three times her previous weight.
She would faint and experience bouts of hallucination throughout.
She said: "My recovery was very traumatic. People believed because I looked healthier that I was better and no longer anorexic."
Gemma's binge-eating and bulimia lasted for 18 months.
With the help of her family and her boyfriend, she is slowly recovering from the vicious cycle and is slowly healing.
she thanks her family for helping her heal, but says that her boyfriend is the reason that she is still alive.
Six months into her journey to recovery and Gemma has become a happy and confident woman.
She has since launched her own line of skincare products and now serves as an inspiration to people with eating disorders.
Some scars from when she cut herself remain and they serve as a reminder and reflection of where she came from and what she went through.
It was indeed a difficult journey for Gemma and her family but seeing her recover and become who she is now must have been the most beautiful thing that they have witnessed.
So to everyone out there, before you question your own beauty or worth, just remember this – you are beautiful, you are enough.
