Powered by its own "constellation" of internet satellites orbiting the planet, Starlink is aiming to offer the fastest internet speed for users across the world.
Having trouble with your sluggish internet connection? You might want to wait for the Starlink internet service in your area.
In case you haven’t heard about it yet, the SpaceX-owned service is powered by a “constellation” of more than 600 micro-satellites in orbit around the planet. The grand plan is to have as much as 30,000 of these micro-satellites once it receives approval from the FCC.
As of this reporting, several beta testers have tried Starlink and those in Los Angeles, California have even shared the service’s performance by checking it via the Ookla Speedtest.
From the posts we’ve seen, it looks like Starlink is capable of delivering download speeds of up to 60 Mbps with upload speeds of around 18 Mbps. On the other hand, pings were somewhere around 31 ms to 94 ms.
Considering the fact that Starlink only has about 600 satellites in operation at the moment, we say that’s actually pretty impressive. And we can only expect it’s performance to improve as more and more satellites are added in the near future.
According to a HotHardware article, SpaceX is “seemingly adding about 5 dozen or so satellites to the constellation every month or two.”
Meanwhile, some rural-based internet users in the US have commented that they’d do anything to enjoy that kind of speed.
“I would give my left nut for any of those speeds lol 2.9 down/.18 up atm,” posted Nightdragon9661 on Reddit. “It’s a good day, normally around 1mbps or less down.”
In the official Starlink website, we read that their service “far surpasses that of traditional satellite internet” because it utilizes “a global network unbounded by ground infrastructure limitations.”
The company is aiming to “deliver high speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable.”
Starlink is hoping to provide service for more users in the Northern US and Canada this 2020 and will then expand its reach to other countries come 2021.
