Singaporean Mom Gives Birth To Baby With Covid-19 Antibodies

This sheds new light as to how antibodies can be passed from a mother to her child.

A mother from Singapore has made headlines after giving birth to a baby with coronavirus antibodies.
31-year-old Celine Ng-Chan delivered baby Aldrin last November 7 and was surprised to learn that he has antibodies against the disease.
Celine was diagnosed with Covid-19 last March while she was 10 weeks pregnant, she revealed in a media interview.

A Singaporean mother has recently given birth to a baby with antibodies against the coronavirus. According to reports, the said mom has contracted Covid-19 in March while she was pregnant. She later recovered from the disease but much to her surprise now, her baby has been born with virus antibodies.

In an interview with The Straits Times, Celine Ng-Chan shared that she was confined for over two weeks after she fell mildly ill because of the virus. She was 10 weeks pregnant at the time but was not worried at all, knowing that “transmission risk (from mother to the fetus) is very low.” However, she and her doctor has been surprised upon learning that Aldrin, her baby boy, was born with antibodies.

Celine, who is 31 years old, shared:

“It’s very interesting. His paediatrician said my Covid-19 antibodies are gone but Aldrin has Covid-19 antibodies. My doctor suspects I have transferred my Covid-19 antibodies to him during my pregnancy.”

Describing both her pregnancy and birth, Celine said things were “smooth sailing” despite getting infected with Covid-19 during her first trimsters, “which is the most unstable stage of the pregnancy,” she pointed out. “I’m very blessed to have Aldrin and he came out very healthy.”

Aldrin was born last November 7 at the National University Hospital. His older sister Aldrina is 2 years old.

“I have always wanted a boy as I resonate very well with boys, having three younger brothers in my family,” admitted Celine.
