Mother Found Pushing 3-Year-Old Son’s Lifeless Body in a Swing at Maryland Park
A 24-year-old mom who was diagnosed with depression was found pushing her dead son’s body in a swing all night.
La Plata, Maryland–The people of the small, peaceful town of La Plata were shocked when they found a 24-year-old woman pushing her 3-year-old son’s dead body in a swing at the Wills Memorial Park last Friday, May 22. Apparently, the mother, who was later identified as Romechia Simms, was seen with her son, Ji’Aire Donnell Lee at the park, which is located at 500 St. Mary’s Avenue since Thursday night.
The Neighbors’ concern grew when they noticed that Romechia was still pushing his son back and forth on the equipment until the morning of the next day. One of the neighbors then decided to call the police.
When the responders arrived at the park…
They knew immediately that the boy had already been dead for hours.
“He was not moving, it’s tragic”, a neighbor said.
But they still performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the child.
Diane Richardson, the spokesperson for the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said that there were no visible signs of trauma or foul play on the child.
Ji’Aire Lee’s remains were examined by the Chief Medical Officer in Baltimore.
The Sheriff’s Office is still waiting for the toxicology results.
Romechia’s mother, 47-year-old Vontasha Simms said that her daughter was diagnosed with depression last February and had been seeking help up until the tragic event at the La Plata playground.
They were homeless and were only staying at a hotel about a mile away from the park.

In an exclusive interview given by Vontasha to WUSA9 she said, “Romechia would never harm my grandson in any type of way. You know, I just believe she had some type of mental illness, some type of mental break that came upon her where she wasn’t able to get herself out of that situation.”
She further added, “I don’t want people to look down upon her I want people to use the situation as an opportunity to grow, learn from it. Like I said, help your neighbor, if you suffer from mental issues and you need help, don’t be afraid to reach out to somebody.
Ji’Aire’s father decided not to comment on the matter.
However, WUSA9 learned on a GOFundMe page set up to help the Simms family, that the estranged father had been battling to get sole physical custody of his son since March. Unfortunately, it was not granted by the court.
The case is still being investigated by the police. Richardson said, “This is a top priority for us. This is a 3-year-old boy that’s deceased. We don’t know the cause of death. There are no obvious signs of trauma, but he is deceased and our detectives are working around the clock trying to put information together to answer the question as to how this child died.”
Romachia is being treated at a local hospital. She hasn’t been criminally charged for the tragic incident.
