Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder Recalled In US Stores Because of Asbestos Concerns

Johnson & Johnson has decided to voluntarily pull out thousands of bottles of Johnson’s Baby Powder from retailers in the United States following fears of asbestos contamination. The company admitted that the decision was made after the US Food and Drug Administration discovered that a bottle bought online tested positive for chrysotile asbestos contamination.

According to several reports, the company specifically recalled 33,000 22-ounce bottles of Johnson’s Baby Powder from lot #22318RB. One lot of Johnson’s Baby Powder has a low level contamination of asbestos, said FDA.

Dr. Ned Sharpless, acting commissioner of the FDA, eventually issued a statement, saying the agency “takes these concerns seriously” and that they will continue to test other talc-based cosmetic products for asbestos to protect users from possible health hazards.

Meanwhile, the company was quick to point out that asbestos levels found in their products didn’t even exceed 0.00002% and so far, it still remains unconfirmed whether the FDA tested a counterfeit product or if it’s an unsealed bottle that may have been contaminated. Nevertheless, they still initiated the recall to ensure the safety of their customers.

An FDA representative, however, insisted that there were “no indications of cross-contamination” during the testing and that they also believe that the product is authentic since there are no previous reports about fake Johnson’s powder being sold in the country.

New tests prove the powder is safe to use, according to the manufacturer.

Eventually, new tests confirmed that the Johnson’s Baby Powder lot is free from asbestos, after obtaining results from 15 tests.
