Do You Act Like an Idiot at the Restaurant? Find Out Here.
Don’t be the customer that restaurant servers hate.
We presume that you like eating out once in awhile. Who doesn’t, right? That means no washing of the dishes after all!
So when you’re finally at the restaurant, are you confident that you’re dining etiquette does not make you look like a fool or make others around you cringe in embarrassment for you? You might be surprised at the common actions done by diners that make them look stupid when dining outside.
Consider this your dining etiquette 101:
1. Snapping your fingers at the server
Snapping your fingers at the server won ‘t make him move any faster, in fact he’ll just do the opposite. It’s a basic lack of communication skills to snap fingers at a person and not to mention rude, too.
2. Using an accent whenever ordering “ethnic” food
This is one thing you really don’t want to do when in a restaurant for two good reasons. One, you don’t want to look and sound pretentious when done right. And lastly, you don’t want to look like a joke when you do it wrong – which is highly likely.
3. Accusing the server of not putting enough alcohol in your drink
We’ve seen this happen a lot of times and it is actually quite embarrassing for the person who keeps on doing this. This kind of customer is a class of his own because he thinks that the server is capable of cheating him on the amount of alcohol he ordered. *insert face palm smiley here*
4. Hitting on the server
Have you ever heard someone say “I met my wife when I hit on her at iHOP.” No one has said that. Ever.
5. Making accusations that a server hit on you
You will also never hear anyone saying “I met my husband when I hit on him while serving at iHOP”. This is just another all-time low and should never happen.
6. Asking lots of question on a dish but ordering something else
Not only is this irritating, it is also considered rude. If you’ve asked over ten questions on a dish, you’ve pretty much committed to ordering that dish.
7. Joking with the server
It’s just a no-no. Especially if they happen to be dad jokes.
8. Not letting the servers dish out your plates
Plates are supposed to be dished out the moment you’re done with the meal. Preventing the server from doing his job is just not cool.
9. Asking the server to pick two very different dishes
To ask the server their favorite dishes is one thing, but to ask them to choose between a quiche and a bacon cheeseburger is like asking if they like basketball or going skiing in the Alps.
10. Dancing
No one dances in a restaurant.. In a club maybe, but not in a restaurant. So please don’t go dancing just because you feel like it.
11. Asking how much to tip
There’s a mobile app for it! You don’t need to ask your server how much to leave as gratuity. It lacks decency and propriety.
12. Stuffing napkins in your glass or cup
Aside from it looking gross, it doesn’t actually help the dishwashers with their job.
13. Eating half of the meal and then sending it back
Aside from this being rude it is also utterly and downright show of the lack of good manners.
14. Rushing your order
You know what they say, “If you want a good meal, you need to wait”.
15. Asking if the gluten-free items are really gluten-free
If the menu says the dish is gluten-free, then it is gluten-free. If you’re not really allergic and still ask, you must have a really big problem.
16. Name dropping the chef
Saying you know the chef doesn’t get you free dinner nor better food.
17. Asking questions servers can’t answer
It isn’t actually the server’s fault if he doesn’t know if which farm the chicken used for your dish came from.
18. Asking the server personal questions
You just don’t have the right to know, that’s all.
19. Asking for second helpings on free bread
No one should be doing that ever. If you’re getting only a basket of free bread be satisfied with it.
20. Assuming anyone in a tie is a restaurant employee
Save yourself the embarrassment of snapping your fingers at a hotshot lawyer instead of the waiter.
If you checked any one of the above, you might want to start rethinking your actions before people assume that you’re idiotic and without any manners.
