Chinese Man Arrested After Throwing 6 Coins Into Plane Engine

Apparently, he did it for "good luck."

  • A Chinese man surnamed Wang has been arrested by authorities after throwing coins into a plane engine.
  • Inspectors found six coins wrapped in red paper which were tossed “for good luck.”
  • 150 passengers were affected after the airline decided to cancel and delay the flight.
  • The superstitious belief has gotten passengers into trouble and has led to arrests, fines, and flight delays over the years.

A male Chinese passenger has recently been arrested after throwing coins into the aircraft’s engine. The reason behind the ridiculous act? He did it for good luck!

Guangxi Beibu Gulf Airlines confirmed the incident in a post on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter. According to the company’s statement, airport crew members noticed several coins under the engine while conducting pre-flight inspections.

Investigators found six coins wrapped in red paper which were tossed into the plane engine for ‘good luck’.

As a result, flight GX8814, which was supposed to fly from Weifang, Shandong to Haikou, Hainan, has since been canceled. Around 150 passengers had to get out of the aircraft to ensure their safety.

A man surnamed Wang later confessed to the act and he eventually ended up getting detained by authorities.

A silly superstitious belief that has caused a lot of trouble – and money!

This, of course, is not the first instance that a Chinese citizen has delayed flights for throwing coins into a plane engine. Over the years, several cases of superstitious passengers have made headlines for the same stunt.

Back in February 2019, budget airline Lucky Air took legal action against 28-year-old Lu Chao after he threw coins into the plane’s engine. He was fined $17,600 as compensation.

In April 2019, a 31-year-old man surnamed Xia got detained for 10 days after tossing three coins “for a safe flight”. 101 passengers were affected after the flight got delayed for 40 minutes.
