7 Tips On Removing Red Wine Stains

Red wine is great as a drink, but when it stains your carpet or your favorite blouse, it's the most difficult stain to remove.

So you’re having expensive red wine with your friends and having an awesome good time. But the moment that wine spills on your favorite white blouse or on the carpet, we’re pretty sure, you won’t be smiling anymore. Removing red wine stains is quite a challenge but the consensus is that blotting is better than rubbing it off.

There really isn’t any foolproof way to remove the whole damn stain off in an instant, but after several tries and empty bottles of red wine, we found the best seven methods of stain removal.

Vodka

There’s a scientific explanation for pouring another alcohol on your wine stained carpet. Really. Higher-proof spirits trump that of red wine because it dissolves the color pigments of the wine and keeps them from clinging on to the carpet.

Milk

Soak the stained material in milk for an hour then finish it off with castile soap. Bye-bye wine stain!

Club Soda

More than just a mixer, club soda has always been used as a solution to do away with red wine stains. The process is simple, soak the stained fabric and blot as fast as you can. There really is no explanation as to why this solution works, but it does.

Salt, boiling hot water, and vinegar

If you have enough time on your hands, try this solution: soak the fabric in cold water, cover with salt until the stain turns pink. Pour boiling water and let the fabric sit in the vinegar solution for a while. Rinse.

Dishwashing liquid + hydrogen peroxide

Soak the stained cloth in equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and dishwashing liquid for several minutes. Blot away the stain after.

White wine and baking soda

Another method to try if you have a bit more time: Soak the stained carpet in white wine so it dilutes the color of the red wine. Follow up with baking soda paste, that’s 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water. Keep the paste moist by spraying with water over a one hour period. The stain should be gone by then.

Shaving cream

Using a generous amount of shaving cream, gently rub it onto the stain then rinse away with warm water. That should just about do the trick.
