7 Facts About Women’s Chin Hair And What It Says About Your Health

Sometimes they can be indicators of a serious health problem.

Despite how advanced modern technology is, there are still things that humanity has yet to tap. There are still questions and/or mysteries with no definite answers. But this is human nature anyway. It gives people a reason to live, even without any assurance of a great outcome. More importantly, it is what makes human, well, human. Take for example the human body: a subject that scientists, even today, continue to pursue.

It is true that most, if not all, women do not grow beards. It is part of their female genes. However, a spindly chin hair, in particular, is something special. Some say it is normal, but to experts, it is a byproduct of either two factors: age or hormonal imbalance (pregnancy or menstruation, among others).

Mirror cites that for most women, the hair on their chin are just part of everyday life. They may be despised by some, but they just happen to be visible when one looks closely in the mirror. But believe it or not, though, the hair sometimes work as indicators of a health issue.

Below are facts that women should take a good look at. (You have been warned).

#1. Genetics, genetics, genetics!

Experts suggest that chin hairs are nothing but genetics. If a woman has these, it simply means that her grandmother has few of these, too. More often than not, these hair surface in a certain age period between families. If the older relative got it when she was a teenager, the next kin would most likely acquire it when she reaches said age.

#2. The most common culprit: imbalanced hormones.

It is impossible not to talk about hormones when talking about everything women. Hormones are part of their everyday life, whether they like it or not. This could also be the reason why chin hairs grow. It might simply be an overabundance of androgens.

#3. Age is simply catching up.

Growing old really takes a toll on the human body, be it a male or female. Chin hairs, in particular, are a part of this. In fact, the moment a woman stops menstruating, these hairs tend to grow noticeably. This is because estrogen production has become less.

#4. A more serious health issue called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

The above mentioned causes are not really alarming, but this one here is. Commonly known as PCOS, this condition has a profound impact on a woman’s reproductive health and hormones. Chin hair is simply a sign or a symptom, similar to irregular periods and cramps. Worst case scenario: there is a cyst growing in the body already.

#5. Another serious health issue: Cushing syndrome.

When there is excessive amount of chin hair, it means that a woman could possibly be suffering from a condition called Cushing syndrome. According to the National Adrenal Disease Foundation, this is a result of too much stress hormone called cortisol. It could be that the adrenal glands is producing way too many than it should be. It could also be accelerated by drugs that relieve arthritis and asthma.

#6. Yes, this one, too. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is also among the reasons why chin hairs grow. This condition, albeit uncommon, is usually diagnosed at birth. It is really rare and, in most cases, a woman would know if she has it.

#7. Either you're pregnant or on birth control.

Pregnancy and birth control are two different things, but they could offer similar results: chin hairs. This, however, boils down to imbalanced hormones, a common occurrence in pregnant women. Fortunately, chin hairs caused by these are just temporary.

There is always the option to remove chin hairs through plucking, waxing and even bleaching. But, as much as possible, it is best to have it checked by a doctor.
