And so it has come to this...
A woman in Zambia made headlines after filing a case against her boyfriend of eight years. The reason? He still didn’t marry her despite them being together for such a long time.
Gertrude Ngoma, a resident of Ndola, Zambia, decided she finally had enough of her boyfriend’s excuses and so the 26-year-old woman ended up taking her problem to the court. Apparently, Herbert Salaliki, 28, has failed to fulfill his promise of marrying her.
In a court hearing, Gertrude said she’s gotten tired of waiting and wanted to know her boyfriend’s real plans for their future. On top of that, she suspects he is not being true to her, claiming she has caught him exchanging text messages with another woman.
“He has never been serious, that is why I bought him to court because I deserve to know the way forward and our future.”
The couple lives in separate homes, although they have on child together.
Gertrude says she feels Herbert is not serious about their relationship despite the fact that he has already issued a dowry payment to her parents.
According to Zambian tradition, men have to pay “a lobola or ‘appreciation fee’ to the family of their fiancée as a sign that they will look after their wife,” a Guardian report said.
Meanwhile, Herbert defended that he does intend on tying the knot with Gertrude but still couldn’t do it because of budget constraints. So far, he still couldn’t afford a wedding. Plus he claims she doesn’t pay him much attention.
Eventually, the local magistrate simply encourged the pair to settle their problem outside of the courtroom.
