“It’s a small world.” We have heard that phrase since time immemorial that we often just say it nonchalantly. But for two women who got acquainted many years ago, these four words held a very special meaning.

Kathy grew up not knowing who her father was. Although she had her mother, two sisters, and one brother with her, the identity of her biological dad was like a dark family secret that no one ever spoke of.

However, in 2011, she found her birth certificate and read it for the first time. Clifford Hawkins—that was the name written on the vital piece of paper—that was her old man’s name.

Now an adult and still determined to get in touch with her pop, she tracked down every man named Clifford Hawkins. She wrote each of them letters, included her phone number and email address, and hoped that one of them would respond.

One of those men lived just a few blocks away from her own home. But after reading Kathy’s missive, he only stashed it in his desk.

Decades later, Carol, that man’s daughter, found Kathy’s letter and read it. Her father was terminally ill and had only four to six weeks to live. She knew she had to do something.

“The girl that’s in the letter… is that your daughter?” she asked him.

But his father said he didn’t know.

Carol decided to phone Kathy so they could talk. And that was when the two women learned something truly remarkable.

“It’s a small world after all” indeed. These two women were playmates when they were young— friends even. They went to the same school and were classmates. And it appeared that they were more than just that to each other.

It may sound like a great movie plot, but their story was not fabricated in any way.
