10 Things You Should Never Say at a Wedding

Don't be the annoying wedding guest couples would feel annoyed they invited. Know what to say and what not to say.

Weddings have got to be one of the most awkward places of socialization. Apart from the required chitchat with the bride and groom, there’s also the talking with the other invited guests. When at a wedding, just like any other social gathering, there are a number of dos and dont’s that you have to follow.

It is always proper to follow etiquette if you do not want to embarrass yourself in front of a lot of people. If you’re unsure on what to say to the bride and groom on their happiest day, brush up on what you should and should never talk about. Here are 10 conversations to avoid when attending a wedding:

10. What happens next? A baby?

For crying out loud, the bride and groom aren’t even done with celebrating the wedding, so why ask about a baby right away? Sure, there are a few couples who decide to have a baby right away after getting hitched, but if you happen to be a friend, this is the last question you ask the bride and groom.

9. The food was blah

As the wedding is traditional, so is food served at the reception not great as well. Don’t expect to be fed the most awesome dishes from all over the world. Besides, you’re supposed to be there to celebrate the union of your friends, not to stuff yourself full.

8. How much did you pay for everything?

Granted you happen to be impressed with everything in the wedding, it is just improper and impolite to ask the bride and groom how much they spent on their very special day. Make a mental note to never even think of asking this question at all.

7. Hey, you didn’t invite “John”

There’s no reason to ask the couple why common friends are not at the wedding. For all you know, “John” may have had a falling out with the bride and groom and you just weren’t aware of it. Or maybe he already said he wouldn’t be able to go. It’s none of your business who the couple decides to invite.

6. This DJ is awful

Just like the food, don’t criticize the band or the DJ. You might not be aware that someone else paid for the band and “gifted” it to the couple.

5. I want to make a toast

Unless the couple assigns you to come up with a short message for them, don’t start an impromptu speech. This is reserved for immediate family and closest friends.

4. You don’t mind if I brought a guest right?

There’s a reason why the invite states that the couple will reserve only one seat for you. It would be totally rude to have a date “crash” your friend’s wedding.

3. Can’t I sit there?

If you’ve been to other weddings, then you would already know that there’s a seating arrangement to follow. If you’re seating with a group of people you don’t know, exert the effort to socialize with them. Don’t bother the bride and groom with switching tables.

2. I put the gift on the gift table

There’s no reason to let the newlyweds that you brought a gift. It’s humble bragging when all that’s important to them is that you attended their day and celebrated the union of their love.

1. It’s not open bar?

Again, it is totally rude to call out specific details of the wedding to the bride and groom. Be grateful that they even thought of inviting you when they could have easily just crossed out your name.
