11-Year-Old Boy Tragically Dies After Playing Deadly Viral Game

"He took this terrible 'game' too far," the boy's dad warned. "Please do everything you can to prevent a similar tragedy.”

There’s just no telling what the next internet craze might be. And sad to say, some of them can lead to tragic results.

This story about an 11-year-old boy, for instance, ended in a terrible way. He died after playing the ‘choking game,’ an old game which has recently resurfaced and gained online popularity.

The dangerous ‘game’ involves the ‘player’ either intentionally choking themselves or having someone else choke them until right before they pass out, to “bring a sense of euphoria” as a Unilad article described it.

Young Garrett Pope Jr. of South Carolina played the ‘game’ and chose to strangle himself. Unfortunately, the said game ended in a fatal accident.

Garrett Pope, the boy’s dad, later took it to Facebook to warn others about the terrible game:

“My name is Garrett Pope, and I’m the father of the 11-year-old boy, Garrett Jr., who passed away tragically this past Wednesday.

“He was our eldest son, a 6th-grade student at the middle school, had just started to play football on Tuesday night, wanted to go to Clemson, was funny, smart, and an amazing son to us and brother to his siblings.”

“He took this terrible ‘game’ too far,” Garrett’s father said. “Please do everything you can to prevent a similar tragedy.”

He also added:

“We do not know where Garrett learned this [the choking game], but the logical source would be from other kids in school, or in our neighborhood.

“Please know that his senseless death was not intentional. He took this terrible “game” too far. My family has never felt pain like this before, and we don’t anyone else to go through what we are going through. Please talk about this with your kids, and do everything you can to prevent a similar tragedy.”

A GoFundMe page has been created in memory of Garrett which aims to raise funds for the local community. The page reads:

“Instead of sending flowers, we ask that a charitable contribution be made to a cause that will immediately impact our community and children.

“Garrett LOVED to read! In his honor, we are collecting funds that will be donated to the Indian Land Elementary and Middle schools to help continue to develop their reading programs and stock every classroom with the best in educational reading materials. We have met with Principle Thorpe, and he agrees that this is a need that the schools and your children will absolutely benefit from.”

If you’re interested to donate, go head over to GoFundMe. Also, don’t forget to spread the word and warn your friends about the deadly game. We wouldn’t want to hear about another casualty!
