"Ukraine seeks peace," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Tensions between Ukraine and Russia recently intensified as a top Ukrainian official said Moscow has sent over 120,000 troops on its borders. According to Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, new Western economic sanctions is necessary to avoid “further escalation” of the situation.
“The cost of preventing Russia’s further escalation will always be lower than the cost of stopping it and mitigating its consequences,” Kuleba shared during a news conference. “It is way more effective to clearly make Moscow understand that a new stage of aggression will have dire consequences for Russia, international isolation and painful economic sanctions.”
The Ukrainian official has said that he is hoping that Russia will once again agree to a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, where the two countries engaged in bloody combat back in 2014. Meanwhile, Russia defended that the army build-up o is because of a military drill aimed to test their readiness.
Eventually, Russia ordered their soldiers to return to their regular positions.
“I believe that the goals of the snap check have been fully achieved,” said Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu “The troops have demonstrated their ability to provide a reliable defense of the country. In this regard, I have decided to complete the inspections in the Southern and Western military districts.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Twitter:
“Ukraine is always vigilant, yet welcomes any steps to decrease the military presence and de-escalate the situation in Donbas. Ukraine seeks peace.”
