Super Typhoon Goni Claims 10 Lives, Leaves Over 390,000 Displaced in the Philippines

The numbers may increase soon as several areas have not reported their status yet.

  • Super Typhoon Goni, locally known as Rolly in the Philippines, has caused massive destruction in several areas.
  • The cyclone trigged flash floods and lahar flow in Albay, burying over 300 homes.
  • So far, 10 have been reported dead with 3 others missing.
  • Goni has been declared as the world’s strongest typhoon of the year, according to weather experts.

Super Typhoon Goni has left a trail of widespread destruction after its onslaught in the Philippines. Based on initial reports, the devastating natural disaster claimed at least 10 lives in the Bicol region. 3 others have been reported missing.

This has been confirmed the Region 5 Office of Civil Defense last Sunday, November 1. They further specified that 9 people have died in Albay while Catanduanes reported 1 death. Others are fearing that the numbers would still go higher as Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Masbate, and Sorsogon are yet to submit their reports to the office.

Goni brought catastrophic winds and intense rains to the Philippines.

390,298 have been left displaced by the destructive cyclone, with 345,044 currently staying in evacuation centers, according to local media network ABS-CBN News.

A netizen took this video as the typhoon raged in Camalig, Albay.

Locally known as Rolly, Typhoon Goni reached Signal No. 5, the highest public storm warning in the Philippines, causing flash floods and even triggering a lahar flow in certain areas.

Over 300 houses have been buried by volcanic rocks and mud flows from the Mayon Volcano. According to Ako Bicol party list representative Zaldy Co, it is believed that “several people” have been buried alive because of it.

Goni also knocked down power lines in Bicol and parts of Calabarzon.

The super typhoon has been labeled by many experts as the strongest to hit the world in 2020.

Fortunately, around 1 million residents have been evacuated, significantly decreasing the number of potential casualties.
