The Source of the Cetina River in Croatia

The Blue Eye is literally crying a river.

  • The source of the Cetina River is located in the northwestern slope of the Dinara mountain range in Croatia.
  • It is approximately 150 meters deep and is about 15 meters in diameter.
  • A known tourist destination, this spring is also the basic source of drinking water in the area.

The source of the Cetina River, otherwise known as Izvor rijeke Cetine, Blue Eye or das Drachenauge (the dragon eye in German), is located in the northwestern slope of Dinara. The karst spring is in Milasevo, near a small village with the same name – Cetina, seven kilometers north of Vrlika. It is over 150 meters or 492 feet deep, and is approximately 15 meters in diameter.

Because of the cold, clean water flowing out of the reservoir, it has been the basic source of drinking water in the area, and an optimal environment for many plant and animal species as well.

It is a protected hydrological monument since 1972.
The enchanting crystal-clear, turquoise spring seems odd yet magical amidst its rocky, karst environment.
Naturally, the calm, beautiful, and crystalline water attracts many tourists.
Adventurous divers also frequently visit and explore it due to its considerable depth.
Cetina River rises at an altitude of 385 meters and runs for 101 kilometers before draining into the Adriatic Sea.

The river is one of the most beautiful and one of the cleanest in Croatia. It meets the man-made Peruća Lakes 25 kilometers downstream from the source, then it runs through the town of Sinj towards Gardun near Trilj. Cetina enters the canyon, where it becomes deeper and slower, and continues to flow south. In Bisko, it turns southeast and moves towards left to the south in Sestanovac. Near Zadvarje it streams west surrounding Mount Mosor until it finally meets the Adriatic Sea via the Omiš Riviera.

Cetina River is great for tourists who love rafting and canyoning according to Split Adventure. But besides being an awesome destination for thrill-seekers, the river offers more benefits to the people living there, specifically in terms of agriculture. Moreover, it is used for several hydropower plants.
